A Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer (RTO) is one of the most efficient and widely used air pollution control systems for treating volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and hazardous air pollutants (HAPs), especially in applications with high airflow and relatively low VOC concentrations.
How a Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer Works
RTOs achieve exceptional thermal energy recovery (typically 95%+) through ceramic heat recovery beds. The process works as follows:
- Process air containing VOCs enters the oxidizer through the inlet heat recovery bed.
- The ceramic media preheats the incoming air using heat stored from the previous cycle.
- The preheated air enters the combustion chamber where it is heated to 1500°F – 1800°F (815°C – 980°C) to oxidize the pollutants into CO₂ and water vapor.
- The hot clean air exits through the opposite heat recovery bed, transferring its heat energy to the ceramic media.
- Directional valves switch the flow every 60+ seconds, alternating between inlet and exhaust beds for continuous high-efficiency operation.
Because of this heat recovery process, the exhaust temperature is usually only about 100°F higher than the inlet temperature, resulting in significantly lower operating costs.
