A Thermal Recuperative Oxidizer (TRO) is a proven air pollution control system designed to destroy volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) through high-temperature thermal oxidation while recovering heat to improve energy efficiency.
TROs are typically selected based on airflow volume, VOC concentration, and required destruction efficiency. They are especially effective for applications with moderate to high VOC loading.
How a Thermal Recuperative Oxidizer Works
In a TRO system:
- Pollutant-laden air is drawn into the system by a fan and first passes through the tube side of a shell-and-tube heat exchanger, where it is preheated by the hot exhaust gases.
- The preheated air then moves to the combustion chamber where a burner raises the temperature to 1,200°F – 1,800°F (650°C – 1,000°C).
- The air remains in the combustion chamber for the required residence time (typically 0.5 to 2.0 seconds), allowing complete thermal oxidation.
- An exothermic reaction converts the VOCs and HAPs into harmless water vapor (H₂O), carbon dioxide (CO₂), and heat.
The clean, hot exhaust gases then pass back through the heat exchanger, transferring heat to the incoming polluted air before being released into the atmosphere.
